Salt Tiles for Walls, Saunas and Grills
Tiles and bricks are the architectural end of the salt range: thinner than
cooking blocks, cut for cladding, and usually bought by the square metre rather
than the piece.
Common formats
| Format | Typical size | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Tile | 20 × 10 × 2.5 cm | Wall cladding, serving |
| Brick | 20 × 10 × 5 cm | Load-bearing walls, sauna benches |
| Slab | 30 × 20 × 5 cm | Grilling, plating |
| Panel | Cut to order | Backlit feature walls |
Backlighting
Salt is translucent, so a wall is only as good as the light behind it. Warm
white LED strip at 2700–3000 K behind a 2.5 cm tile gives the amber glow
people expect. Leave a 30–50 mm cavity for airflow, and use LED rather than
incandescent — heat plus salt shortens fixture life.
Adhesives and framing
Do not use water-based tile adhesive: it dissolves the contact face. Standard
practice is a salt-based mortar or a neutral-cure structural adhesive,
combined with a mechanical frame that carries the weight. For anything above
about 1.5 m, mechanical support is not optional — a bonded-only wall will creep.
Saunas and salt rooms
In a sauna, tiles go on the wall rather than the bench face, and stay clear of
direct contact with the stove. Keep the room dry between sessions: a salt wall in
a steam room will weep and eventually erode. If the brief is steam, use a sealed
decorative panel behind glass instead — see our
salt therapy notes.
Grilling on tiles
Thin tiles heat quickly, which makes them convenient and fragile. Follow the same
stepped heating used for cooking blocks,
but expect a shorter life — a tile is a serving surface that can grill, not a
grill that can serve.
Ordering notes
- Specify thickness tolerance (±2 mm is normal) and edge finish.
- Ask for colour banding across the pallet if the wall will be seen as one
surface.
- Add 8–10% breakage allowance to any tile order; cut salt is brittle in
transit.
- Confirm crate weight early — a square metre of 2.5 cm tile is around 55 kg.
Asian Salts cuts tiles, bricks and custom panels to drawing. Send dimensions and
quantity and we will quote with crating and a breakage allowance included.
