Bath and Spa Salts: A Retailer's Guide
Bath salt is the easiest Himalayan product to bring to market and the easiest to
get subtly wrong. The raw material is simple; the specification is where margin
is won or lost.
Start with granulation
Coarse granules (4–8 mm) are the retail standard: they look like a premium
product through a window, dissolve slowly enough to feel luxurious, and resist
caking better than fine grades. Fine salt dissolves instantly, which customers
read as "less product for my money" even when the weight is identical.
For scrubs, go the other way — a fine or extra-fine grade suspended in a carrier
oil.
Fragrance and colour
- Loading: 0.5–2% fragrance or essential oil by weight is typical. Above 2%
the salt clumps and the oil separates in the jar.
- Blending: tumble-blend at low speed; high-shear mixers fracture crystal
and generate fines.
- Curing: leave the blend 24–48 hours before packing so the oil distributes
evenly.
- Colour: the salt is already pink. Added dye tends to read as artificial —
and it stains grout.
Packaging
| Format | Size | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Glass jar with cork | 250–500 g | Premium shelf presence, heavy to ship |
| PET jar | 500 g–1 kg | Light, safe near a bath, lower perceived value |
| Stand-up pouch | 500 g–2 kg | Best cost per unit; choose a moisture barrier |
| Bulk sack | 10–25 kg | Spa and hotel channel |
Whatever the format, it must be moisture-tight. Scented salt in a paper-lined
pouch will cake into a brick within a season on a shop shelf.
Shelf life and storage
Unscented salt does not expire. Fragrance does — plan on 12–24 months and print a
best-before accordingly. Store above the floor, away from external walls, and out
of direct sunlight, which fades both fragrance and any added botanicals.
Claims and compliance
This is the part that costs brands money after launch. Cosmetic regulations in
the EU, UK and US restrict therapeutic claims on a bath product. Describe what it
is — mineral bath salt, a soak, a scrub — and describe the experience.
Avoid claims about treating a medical condition unless you hold the dossier to
back them, and check your destination market's labelling rules before printing.
