Why Salt Lamps Sweat and How to Stop It
"My lamp is leaking" is the most common salt lamp complaint, and it is not a
defect. Salt is hygroscopic — it pulls water vapour out of the air. Above
roughly 75% relative humidity, salt will absorb enough moisture to dissolve its
own surface. Warmth reverses the process by evaporating that film away.
So weeping is always the same equation: too much humidity, not enough heat.
Fixes for households
- Leave it on. A lamp lit for most of the day rarely weeps.
- Use a warm bulb — 15–40 W incandescent, matched to the lamp's weight, not
an LED.
- Move it away from bathrooms, kitchens and open windows.
- Run a dehumidifier if the room sits above 60% RH.
- Bag it — a sealed plastic bag with a silica sachet for holidays or storage.
Fixes for retailers
Shop floors are worse than living rooms: doors open constantly and display lamps
are usually switched off overnight.
- Keep display lamps lit during opening hours, and bag the stock room inventory.
- Store boxed lamps off the floor, away from external walls.
- Add a silica gel sachet inside each carton for coastal and monsoon markets.
- Rotate stock — a lamp that has sat in a damp store room for six months will
arrive damp with the customer.
Fixes for importers
Sea freight is the highest-risk stage of a lamp's life: a container crossing the
tropics swings through daily condensation cycles.
- Specify shrink-wrapped lamps inside cartons, not bare crystal.
- Add container desiccant poles or bags — one per 2–3 tonnes of cargo is
typical.
- Ask for moisture-barrier liners on pallets for monsoon-season sailings.
- Inspect on arrival and unwrap promptly; wrapped lamps left sealed in a warm
warehouse can sweat inside their own packaging.
A weeping lamp is not ruined. Dry it, light it and it recovers. What it cannot
recover from is months of sitting damp in a sealed carton — that is when the
base corrodes and the fitting fails.
The one genuine defect
If the metal fitting or cord shows corrosion, stop using the lamp and replace
the fitting. Salt plus moisture plus electricity is the one part of this problem
that is not cosmetic.
