Packaging and Labelling for Export Markets
Packaging protects the product; labelling protects the shipment. Both get
scrutinised at the border, and both are cheaper to get right before production
than after.
Bulk packaging
| Format | Capacity | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| PP woven bag, PE liner | 25 kg | Edible and industrial grades |
| Jumbo / FIBC bag | 1,000–1,250 kg | High-volume industrial buyers |
| Carton with inner wrap | 5–20 kg | Lamps, blocks, tiles |
| Retail pouch or jar | 100 g–2 kg | Finished consumer goods |
For anything edible, the liner must be food-contact certified and sealed —
not folded. Moisture is the enemy at every stage: a sound liner is the difference
between free-flowing salt and a caked lot.
Pallets and containers
- Standard pallet loads of 1,000–1,250 kg, stretch-wrapped and corner-boarded.
- Wooden pallets must be ISPM 15 heat-treated and stamped, or your container
will be held.
- Add desiccant for tropical routes and monsoon sailings.
- Label pallets with lot numbers matching the packing list — inspectors check.
Label elements for edible salt
Requirements differ by market, but the following covers most of the EU, UK and
US:
- Product name and grade
- Net weight (metric, plus imperial for the US)
- Ingredients — normally just "Himalayan pink salt"
- Country of origin
- Lot or batch number
- Best-before date, where required
- Importer or distributor name and address in the destination market
- Nutrition panel where the destination requires it
- Allergen statement where applicable
That seventh point catches new importers most often: an EU or UK label must name
a business established in that market, not only the exporter.
Cosmetic and bath products
Bath salt is usually regulated as a cosmetic. Expect to need an INCI ingredient
list, a responsible-person address, a batch code and a period-after-opening or
best-before mark. In the EU and UK a **safety assessment and product
notification** are required before sale — start that process well before your
container sails.
Non-food goods
Lamps need electrical compliance for the destination — the correct plug type and
certification marks for the fitting, plus a care card. Blocks and tiles need
weight and handling warnings, and benefit from a printed heating schedule.
Artwork practicalities
- Send print-ready artwork with bleed, in CMYK, with fonts outlined.
- Confirm barcode type and, for retail, that it scans on a printed proof.
- Approve a physical proof, not a PDF, for anything with a colour match.
Asian Salts packs to buyer specification, including private-label artwork and
market-specific labelling. Send your artwork and destination market and we will
confirm what needs to change before the run.
